PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Diversified mineral explorer Image Resources has sharpened focus on its Boonanarring mineral sands project, in Western Australia, after recent drill results confirmed that the deposit was one of the highest-grade mineral sands deposits currently being considered for development, anywhere in the world.

A total Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant resource of 21.5-million tons, at 8.3% heavy minerals, containing some 1.7-million tons of heavy minerals, had been estimated at the Boonanarring site.

The currently defined resource extended over a strike length of 10.5 km, and was estimated to contain some 370 000 t of zircon and 870 000 t of high-quality ilmenite.

“Completion of the overall resource estimate for Boonanarring is a major milestone in the evaluation of the proposed operations,” said MD Peter Davies.

He said on Friday that a further survey was planned north of Boonanarring’s Block A, after ground magnetics demonstrated that the area had the potential to host similar high-grade mineralisation.

Follow-up drilling would be planned as required, the company said.

Meanwhile, all technical studies relating to process testwork, product quality, process plant design and capital and operating cost estimates had been completed, while mine planning and production schedule work was nearly complete.

In parallel, Image was also working to compile the completed environmental work to submit to the relevant authorities by the end of June this year.

“The work completed to date has significantly de-risked the project. In the course of the studies over the last year, we have identified a number of opportunities to increase the overall robustness of the project through the use of innovative concepts, and we look forward to announcing the results of this work in June,” said Davies.
