Boddington mine, Australia
Name of the Mine
Boddington mine.
Location
South-east of Perth, in Western Australia.
Mine Owner/s
Leading gold mining company Newmont Corporation.
Brief Description
Boddington is recognised as a Tier 1 asset and a cornerstone of Newmont’s global portfolio. Boddington became the world’s first gold mine to implement an autonomous haulage system in 2021. By 2022, the autonomous fleet had safely hauled more than 100-million tonnes of material, marking a major milestone in operational efficiency and safety.
Brief History
Boddington has been wholly owned by Newmont since June 2009 when the miner acquired the final 33.33% interest from AngloGold Ashanti Australia.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Copper and gold.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
Not indicated.
Geology/Mineralisation
Boddington consists of greenstone diorite hosted mineralisation.
Reserves
Total proven and probable reserves as at December 31, 2024, were estimated at 559.8-million tonnes grading at 0.6 g/t gold and 0.09% copper for 10.8-million ounces of gold and 500 000 t of copper respectively.
Resources
Total measured and indicated resources as at December 31, 2024, were estimated at 244.7-million tonnes grading 0.54 g/t gold and 0.12% copper for 4.2-million ounces of gold and 300 000 t of copper respectively. Inferred mineral resources were estimated at 3.5-million tonnes grading 0.6 g/t gold for 100 000 oz of gold.
Type of Mine
Mining operations comprise two openpit operations located adjacent to each other.
Mining Method
The mine uses conventional owner-operated equipment.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
The mine operates the North and South pits using two electric shovels, a diesel powered face shovel and two excavators as its prime ex-pit material movers with a fleet of 41 production autonomous haulage trucks.
The milling plant includes a three-stage crushing facility (two primary crushers, six secondary crushers and four high-pressure grinding rolls), four ball mills, a flotation circuit and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit.
The flotation circuit process recovers gold/copper concentrate before the material is then processed by a traditional CIL circuit where the remaining gold is recovered to produce doré. Power for the operation is sourced through the local power grid under a long-term power purchase agreement.
Prospects
Brownfield exploration and development for new reserves is ongoing.
