Bisichi half-year output falls on rain, contamination issues
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Higher-than-expected seasonal rains and stone contamination issues have impacted on London-listed Bisichi Mining’s coal output for the first half of the year.
Production from the company’s direct coal mining asset Black Wattle fell to 582 000 t in the six months to June 30, from the 795 000 t achieved in the first half of 2016.
“Although this was an improvement on the 466 000 t achieved in the second half of last year, management has planned for further progress to be made in developing our opencast areas and increasing production in the second half of the year,” the company said in a half-year update to shareholders on Thursday.
This included the completion of the majority of the new infrastructure improvements to the coal washing plant.
“The new infrastructure will assist in reducing stone contamination through the washing plant and will allow Black Wattle to mine at a higher rate of production at our opencast areas and increase yield.”
In addition, physical demand for lack Wattle coal remained strong and international and domestic coal prices have remained stable.
This is expected to continue for the balance of the year.
