BHP confirms 380 jobs to be cut at Olympic Dam
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining giant BHP Billiton on Monday confirmed that some 380 staff would be made redundant, mostly at the Olympic Dam mine, in South Australia, as the company continued to simplify its business.
A spokesperson for the company told Mining Weekly Online that the latest rounds of redundancies resulted from a June review, which had examined all areas of the business, including labour productivity.
“At Olympic Dam, we continue to simplify our business to ensure we are operating as efficiently as possible. This is consistent with the work being done at other BHP Billiton operations and across the resources sector and reflects the challenging external environment,” the spokesperson said.
It was expected that the implementation of the operational review would be completed by mid-September.
“The ongoing review of Olympic Dam and the impacts on our workforce is not a reflection of any policy settings in South Australia,” said asset president Jacqui McGill.
“Instead it is driven by the global challenges in the resources sector and the need to transform Olympic Dam into a sustainable operation that can contribute to the South Australian economy for many years to come.”
In November 2014, BHP revealed that it would spend about $200-million on debottlenecking operations at Olympic Dam in the hopes of increasing ore production to 11-million tonnes a year and deliver an additional 50 000 t/y of copper from the operation by 2018.
The Olympic Dam project currently employs some 4 000 staff.
