PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX- and TSX-listed gold miner Besra has resumed operations at its Phuoc Son mine, in central Vietnam, after operations were suspended on May 7.

The company initiated the shutdown owing to a blockade of the access road to the site by a number of individuals from the local community. The blockade followed the unauthorized release of 755 kg of tailings into the local watershed.

The miner said on Tuesday that the discharge occurred owing to an act of vandalism on May 7, when vandals attempted to remove a tailings pipe from site.

The plant shutdown was initiated as soon as the discharge was discovered, and the company launched clean-up operations.

Negotiations with the community concluded peacefully, and resulted in the blockade being withdrawn on May 12.

Besra noted that despite the production downtime, the company expected to meet its production guidance of between 60 000 oz to 65 000 oz for the year ending June.
