PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Uranium developer Berkeley Energia has started the development of its Salamanca project, in Spain.

“Salamanca has now moved into the development phase and the local support we have received for the project is fantastic,” said Berkeley MD Paul Atherley.

“We are very much looking forward to working closely with the local community as we bring the much needed jobs, training and new business activity to the area.”

The Salamanca project was expected to deliver about 4.3-million pounds a year of uranium oxide, over a mine life of 18 years. All major approvals for the development of the project were already in place.

To date, Berkeley had invested more than $60-million in the project.

The company said on Tuesday that it had selected some of Spain’s largest infrastructure contractors to initiate work, which would include re-routing an existing electrical power line to service the project and a 4 km realignment of an existing road to allow for the start of mining at the Retortillo pit.
