Name: Bengalla mine.

Location: The Bengalla mine is located 4 km south-west of Muswellbrook, in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, in Australia.

Mine Owner/s: Bengalla Mining Company (BMC), a joint venture between New Hope Group (80%) and Taipower (20%).

Brief Description: Bengalla is a large single pit opencut mine, which supplies international markets with thermal coal.

Brief History: BMC was granted development consent DA 211/93 for the construction and operation of the Bengalla project in August 1995. The mine has been operating for more than 20 years.

Primary Metals/Minerals: Thermal coal.

Secondary Metals/Minerals: None.

Geology/Mineralisation: The Bengalla operation is geologically situated in a Permian basin called the Sydney basin, and mines the Whittingham Coal Measures of the Hunter coalfields.

Reserves: Total recoverable reserves as at May 31, 2020, were estimated at 229-million tonnes.

Resources: Total mineral resources as at May 31, 2020, were estimated at 411-million tonnes.

Mining Method: Bengalla is a single pit opencut mine, using dragline, truck and excavator methods to extract coal.

Major Infrastructure and Equipment: Infrastructure requirements necessary for the operation of Bengalla have been progressively developed since mining started.

The mine comprises a surface coal mine, a coal handling preparation plant, a rail loop, loading facilities and other associated infrastructure.
