- BASF’s focus on improving science education
BASF Construction Chemicals South Africa (Pty) Ltd recently donated R50 000 for the support of science education to the Durban branch of PROTEC, a national independent non-profit educational service provider in South Africa that specialises in science, mathematics and technology education.
At the cheque hand-over ceremony, BASF’s Durban-based dispersions plant Site Manager, Kay Govender, said: “BASF globally selects Corporate Social Responsibility programs that foster positive social development. The company’s activities are focused above all on making contributions towards the education of young people.”
“As the world’s leading chemical company, BASF needs to ensure that our future generation of scientists are enabled and have the best possible facilities in which to nurture a passion for learning,” continued Govender. “Our country still faces a shortage of technically skilled professionals, and BASF, through supporting institutions such as Protec, is committed to uplifting the levels of science education in the areas in which we operate,” he continued.
The Durban branch of Protec was established 25 years ago and runs Saturday classes in the AECI Training Centre in the Heartlands Industrial complex near Umbogintwini – the same industrial complex where the BASF Dispersions plant is based.
Recognised as a UNESCO Co-operating organisation, Protec is a member of the National Science and Technology Forum, and serves on its education unit. Its main operations involve implementing a series of educational projects throughout South Africa which are largely focused on teacher training, school improvement in science, mathematics, technology, Information Technology and English education, as well as on school manager training. A significant number of their students go on to study at university and pursue technical careers which directly or indirectly impact on the chemical industry.
