Bald Hill lithium mine, Australia

Name of the Project
Bald Hill lithium mine.
Location
The project area is located 50 km south-east of Kambalda, in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia.
Client
Tawana Resources and Alliance Mineral Assets Limited (AMAL).
Project Description
The project comprises four mining leases, one mining lease application, 12 exploration licences, eight prospecting licences and one general-purpose lease totalling 790 km.
The Bald Hill Mine currently consists of an openpit, a 1.2-million-tonne-a-year lithium dense-media separation (DMS) circuit and spiral circuits, waste-rock dumps, stores, a camp (including administrative and living quarters) and associated infrastructure.
A July 2017 prefeasibility study estimated initial production of 155 000 t/y of spodumene concentrate from the DMS and 260 000 lb/y of tantalum pentoxide from the tantalum processing facility.
Lithium concentrate is hauled on Binneringie road to the Port of Esperance.
Further feasibility work is being undertaken on a lithium fines circuit to treat stockpiled fines and middlings, which has the potential to add to production.
Potential Job Creation
About 200 people will be on site during the peak construction period.
Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
The project has an expected internal rate of return of 185%.
Value
A$42.20-million.
Duration
Bald Hill started production of lithium concentrate in March 2018.
Latest Developments
Tawana Resources and AMAL have sold the first tantalum concentrate produced at the project.
About 20 t to 30 t of high-grade tantalum concentrate have been sold to HC Starck Tantalum and Niobium, with the JV partners remaining engaged with the company for a long-term offtake agreement for the high-grade concentrate product.
In addition, the JV partners have also agreed to sell 400 t of low-grade tantalum concentrate from Bald Hill between April and July this year, under a one-off sales contract to Global Advanced Metals Greenbushes.
Commercial production at the Bald Hill operation was declared in August, and the JV partners are aiming to produce between 60 000 t and 75 000 t of spodumene concentrate between July and December.
Key Contracts and Suppliers
Primero Group (EPC).
On Budget and on Time?
The project is on track for commissioning to start in the first quarter of 2018.
