Balama to restart after security scare
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Graphite miner Syrah Resources was forced to temporarily suspend operations at its Balama project, in Mozambique, on security concerns.
The company on Monday told shareholders that it was informed of security concerns in the Namuno district, 50 km from the Balama graphite operation on November 11. Operations were temporarily suspended and the company moved the majority of its workforce and contractors away from site.
The company's full contract security service and a small number of employees and contractors remained on site, and remained safe.
Following consultation with the government, security authorities and other stakeholders monitoring the situation, assessed that it was safe to return the workforce and resume operations from Monday.
Syrah only recently returned to full mining and processing operations at Balama following illegal industrial action by a small contingent of local employees and contractors halting production in September.
