Avebury mine, Tasmania
Name of the Mine
Avebury mine.
Location
About 8 km west of Zeehan, within a known mining district on Tasmania’s western coast.
Mine Owner/s
Mallee Resources.
Brief Description
Avebury is an established underground mine with a 900 000 t/y processing plant.
The site hosts a considerable nickel sulphide mineral resource.
Brief History
The Avebury nickel deposit was discovered in 1997.
Five years later a maiden mineral resource estimate was declared. Work began on the underground portal and decline in 2004. By 2006 underground mining had started. A total of 8 500 m of underground development was completed up until 2009. In 2009, mining and processing activities ceased.
Mallee gained ownership of Avebury and its associated assets in 2022 through a company administration process, and after laying dormant for 13 years plans are under way to restart the mine.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Nickel.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
None stated.
Geology/Mineralisation
The Avebury nickel deposit is hosted in an ultramafic body located within a sedimentary sequence, comprising volcaniclastic turbidites.
Mineralisation at Avebury comprises veins and coarse-grained disseminations of sulphides that can be hosted by serpentinised ultramafic rocks and skarn-altered rocks.
Reserves
None stated.
Resources
Total indicated and inferred mineral resources as at April 2022 were estimated at 29.3-million tonnes grading 0.9% nickel, 229 parts per million cobalt (ppm) and 321 ppm arsenic for 264 000 t contained nickel and 7 000 t contained cobalt.
Mining Method
Underground, using a combination of transverse and longitudinal stoping.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
The underground workings include ventilation shafts, an escapeway, five levels of development drives and an extension of the decline to the western Viking lode.
Prospects
Avebury is fully permitted for mining operations, which has allowed for an accelerated restart to mining operations.
