Datsun has revealed sketches providing a preview of the first new-generation Datsun model, set to be unveiled in India on July 15.

The car, aimed at the Indian market, will be the first of the future Datsun model line-up to be launched from 2014 onwards.

The premiere event will not only unveil the new model, but also reintroduce to the world the Datsun brand, whose return to market was announced by parent company Nissan in March 2012.

The reinvented brand will be aimed at the middle class in high-growth markets such as India, Indonesia and Russia.

Datsun will also be launched in South Africa in 2014.

Although all Datsun models will be indi- vidually developed for different markets, the concept is set to follow a common inspiration, notes Nissan in a statement.

“All future Datsun models will offer up-and-coming customers in high-growth markets an engaging driving experience, peace-of-mind ownership and accessibility at the right and transparent price, with a competitive total cost of ownership. These product values will be supported by Nissan Motor Company’s experience as a global car manufacturer.”

Datsun head Vincent Cobee adds that Datsun cars “will be locally developed with the support of Nissan Motor Company engineers and stylists, and will be locally produced”.

That said, Nissan South Africa (SA) spokesperson Veralda Schmidt notes that the Datsuns destined for South Africa will be produced in India.

“No plans for local production have been announced yet.”
