Explosives company AECI’s Australian subsidiary has been awarded a five-year contract extension by mining contractor and services provider Thiess for the supply of bulk emulsion explosives, initiating systems and related services to mines in Queensland and New South Wales.

The Australian contract, using AECI’s existing in-country capabilities and infrastructure, includes the supply of bulk emulsion explosives formulations produced at AECI’s site in Bajool, Queensland, as well as gassing technology for down-the-hole delivery by Thiess.

Under the terms of the contract, AECI will also supply its Intellishot electronic initiating system and booster to Thiess.

AECI says the move consolidates its business in Australia, further strengthening the relationship between the two companies. The relationship began in 2014 when AECI entered the Australian market to support Thiess.

AECI and Thiess also have long-standing partnerships in Indonesia and in a number of African countries.

AECI CE Mark Dytor says the company’s relationship with Thiess “exemplifies” how AECI lives its “AECI bigger” values of being “bold and innovative, of going green and of being engaged and responsible”.

He adds that this philosophy is built on mutual trust and honesty to the benefit not only of AECI’s two businesses, but also the global mining sector as a whole.

“AECI Australia is celebrating the achievement of seven years worked without a lost-time injury. We are proud to deliver a safer, innovative and cost-effective product offering that enables ‘one AECI, for a better world’,” says Dytor.

He says that “better mining” is one of AECI’s sustainability goals because the company recognises the importance of making global mining safer and more circular.

“Significant opportunities exist and we look forward to realising more of these in collaboration with customers such as Thiess,” concludes Dytor.
