HAMBURG – Aurubis, Europe's largest copper producer, on Thursday said an informal agreement on copper concentrate (ore) supplies from the new Nussir mine in Norway's Arctic had been terminated by the two parties.

Nussir was not immediately available for comment.

Environmentalists are occupying the Nussir site in Kvalsund to prevent work at what Nussir says will be the world's first fully electrically-powered copper mine with zero carbon dioxide emissions.

The project has faced opposition from indigenous Sami herders and fishermen who say the mine could damage summer reindeer pastures and destroy spawning grounds for coastal cod.

Aurubis signed a memorandum of understanding in 2020 with the aim of entering into a formal supply contract for copper concentrate at a later date.

Since the signing, Aurubis said it has regularly reviewed the progress on site within the context of corporate social responsibility due diligence.

"In the process, the company had to realise that, in addition to commercial conditions, certain social aspects of the project need to be given even greater consideration," Aurubis said. "Aurubis and Nussir have therefore made the decision to now terminate the memorandum of understanding."
