PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Freight operator Aurizon has extended its contract with mining major BHP Billiton to haul coal from the Mt Arthur coal mine, in New South Wales.

The contract allowed for a potential increase in coal haulage volumes from the current 18-million tonnes a year to a maximum of 26-million tonnes a year, and extended the contract date until June 2028.

Aurizon executive VP for commercial and marketing Mauro Neves said on Monday that the company’s recent opening of its A$180-million Hexham support facility, in Newcastle was a signal of its commitment and confidence in the local coal industry.

“The facility has strengthened our business to support the growth and future success of our customers.”
