TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Canadian midtier gold and copper producer Aura Minerals on Thursday reported that a miner died in an accident at its Aranzazu mine, in Zacatecas, Mexico.

TSX-listed Aura said the miner, who was employed by Aranzazu, was on Thursday fatally injured above ground when unexpected movement of material from a sidewall breached his equipment.

All underground and openpit activities, except emergency requirements, were suspended and secured and governmental agencies were informed.

A formal investigation was under way.

The accident area remained closed and secured; however, other normal operations had resumed by Thursday.

Aura president and CEO James Bannantine said the company would review safety measures and procedures to prevent such accidents from recurring at any of its operations.

The company’s producing assets include the copper/gold/silver Aranzazu mine, the San Andres gold mine, in Honduras, and the Sao Francisco and Sao Vicente gold mines, in Brazil. Aura is also busy developing the copper/gold/iron Serrote da Laje project, in Brazil.
