PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal developer Atrum has inched closer to a takeoff deal at its Groundhog project, in Canada, signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to negotiate binding sales agreements.

The MoUs were inked with Japanese firms, including some of the country’s largest corporate conglomerates.

“We are excited to be working with some of Japan’s largest corporate conglomerates and these MoUs are a key milestone. Our vision is to become the world’s premier supplier of ultra high-grade anthracite, and selling into Japan is a core part of our strategy,” said Atrum VP for marketing and business development Peter Doyle.

The Groundhog North project, which covers less than 5% of Atrum’s broader Groundhog anthracite project, and which is estimated to host some 1.57-billion tonnes of resource, was expected to deliver about 5.4-million tonnes of coal a year.
