JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Australian miner Atlas Iron has set an initial exploration target of between 100-million and 150-million tonnes for its Corunna Downs project, in the Pilbara.

The exploration target only covers 8 km of 80 km of prospective tenements located within trucking distance of Port Hedland.

Atlas MD Ken Brinsden pointed out that the exploration target was set following outstanding drill results from the northern-most part of the tenement.

“This drilling represents some 10% of the 80 km string length of prospective rock units contained on Atlas 100%-owned tenure connecting the Corunna Downs and McPhee Creek projects.”

Brinsden added that the assessment of Atlas’ tenure between the two projects had determined additional targets in similar geology.

“This information, combined with the project’s strategic location, leaves Atlas increasingly confident about the potential for Corunna Downs to become a substantial new iron-ore province for the company

“The Corunna area is a potential game-changer for Atlas. It has the scope to provide grade, scale, low impurity levels and be delivered by road to Port Hedland or assist in providing the critical mass of tonnes required for future infrastructure solutions.”

Atlas would now continue with its exploration and infill drilling at the north of the Corunna project, with a view to realising the potential in a new exploration target area.
