PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore miner Atlas Iron on Wednesday reported a significant direct shipping ore discovery at its Corunna Downs project, where an exploration programme was drill testing one of several zones of surface iron enrichment.

The miner noted that to date, some 31 reverse circulation holes had been completed with assay results received on 11 of these holes. No exploration target had been defined yet, Atlas added.

Some of the intercepts included 234 m at 59.2% iron, 194 m at 59.9% iron, and 180 m at 58.8% iron.

“The first round of drilling results at Corunna Downs are spectacular and we look forward to seeing the remaining outstanding assays from this first pass drilling,” said MD Ken Brinsden.

“They also demonstrate the additional potential still to be realised from our North Pilbara portfolio,” he said.

Brinsden noted that Atlas currently had two separate exploration teams in the field, with the other focused on the adjacent Pardoo operation. Additional priority drilling would also be undertaken at the Abydos and Miralga Creek operations during the coming months.
