Atlas breaks shipping record in August
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Iron-ore miner Atlas Iron has set shipping records during the month of August, shipping 960 000 t from its Pilbara operations.
The shipping record was supported by record production across the company’s mining, processing and hauling operations, with combined production achieving a sustained rate of ten-million tonnes a year, or greater.
“Atlas has commenced five mines in five years and has a track record of delivering production growth in the Pilbara. In the process, we are delivering strong operating cash flows,” said MD Ken Brinsden.
He noted that mine production expansions and port developments were on track to achieve the company’s near-term objective of sustaining production at ten-million tonnes a year, adding that substantial progress had been made across its suit of development projects. This included first production from the Abydos mine, the start of construction at the Mount Webber mine, and the wet commissioning of the additional port stockyard and ship-loading capacity at Utah Point.
“Atlas has both a successful operating business today and significant growth options for tomorrow. Our existing and future port allocations, combined with a substantial Pilbara resource and reserve base ensures Atlas offers outstanding leverage to strength in the iron-ore price.”
Direct shipping ore at the Abydos mine would ramp-up over the coming months to between two-million and three-million tonnes a year, and the company was targeting an extended mine life of between seven and ten years with further exploration and conversion of existing resources.
Brinsden noted that the company was on track to ship between 2.3-million and 2.4-million tonnes during the September quarter.
