South Africa’s top scientists recognised
The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) recognised top South African scientists at its yearly awards ceremony held in Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape, earlier this month.
The academy awards the ASSAf Science-for-Society gold medal for outstanding achievement in scientific thinking to the benefit of society.
The award was presented to the University of Cape Town’s Department of Biological Sciences head, Professor Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan.
Chinsamy-Turan is also a palaeobiologist and global expert on the microscopic structure of the bones of extinct and extant vertebrates. Her work has been recognised through several highly acclaimed awards.
Further, two scientists were recognised for outstanding achievement.
Professor Yahya Choonara received the AU-TWAS Award for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation, which aims to recognise and award talented young scientists in Africa.
He is an associate professor of pharmaceutics at the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and senior research scientist at the Wits Advanced Drug Delivery Platform research unit.
Professor Marlien Pieters received the Earth and Life Sciences Award. She is subprogramme head of Nutrition and Hemostasis at North-West University’s Centre of Excellence.
Her role in this subprogramme is to not only establish a sustainable research programme for postgraduate students but also acquire infrastructure, equipment, international and national networks and sustainable research funding.
