Aquila metallurgical coal project, Australia – update

Name of the Project
Aquila metallurgical coal project.
Location
Central Queensland, Australia.
Project Owner/s
Aquila forms part of the Capcoal Joint Venture between Anglo American (70%) and Mitsui & Co (30%).
Project Description
Aquila will be one of the world’s most technologically advanced underground mines.
The project will extend the life of Anglo American’s existing Capcoal underground operations, near Middlemount, by seven years, and continue to use the associated infrastructure at the Capcoal complex as its nearby Grasstree mine approaches the end of its life.
The new mine will have a total average yearly saleable production of about five-million tonnes of hard coking coal.
The project includes a reverse osmosis water treatment system to increase the use of recycled water and reduce the reliance on fresh water at the mine.
Potential Job Creation
The mine supports about 600 ongoing operational roles for Anglo’s Queensland-based workforce, including providing continuity of employment for the company’s Grasstree mining team.
Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
Not stated.
Capital Expenditure
A$226-million.
Planned Start/End Date
The project was on track for first longwall production in early 2022.
Latest Developments
The Aquila mine has achieved its first longwall shear of steelmaking metallurgical coal on schedule and on budget, marking the project’s final stages of construction and commissioning.
Anglo metallurgical coal business CEO Tyler Mitchelson has described the safe original-schedule startup of longwall mining at Aquila, despite the effects of the pandemic, as an important milestone for the metallurgical coal business that provides ongoing support for the Middlemount community and the Queensland economy.
