With signs of waning vaccine uptake, South Africa is set to join a growing list of countries that require either digital or physical proof of vaccination before an individual can participate in certain activities. Since August, France has stipulated that a Passe Sanitaire QR-code is required for restaurants, planes and regional trains, as well as venues accommodating 50 people or more. In South Africa, a similar code is likely to become an essential smartphone addition for those who are ready to resume ‘new normal’ living, amid the persistent threat of Covid.
