PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The oil and gas industry has congratulated Labor on its federal election win over the weekend, with Anthony Albanese emerging as Australia’s new Prime Minister.

Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (Appea) acting CEO Damian Dwyer said that the industry was looking forward to working with the new government to continue to secure energy supply for Australians and decarbonise in a cleaner energy future.

“The industry has a track record of working constructively with all governments to deliver huge economic benefits to Australia, including over A$5-billion a year in payments, tens of thousands of jobs and safe and reliable energy to homes and businesses such as manufacturers,” said Dwyer.

“We urge any new administration to continue to recognise the critical role of gas in the future decarbonised energy mix and the development of our region, as well as focusing policy efforts on improving the competitiveness of the nation’s investment environment.

“We are committed to economy-wide net zero by 2050 and Appea members are already spending billions of dollars on decarbonisation tools such as carbon capture and storage and hydrogen-related technologies.”
