PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold miner St Barbara on Wednesday, again, announced record gold production, this time for the quarter ended March.

The miner produced 111 288 oz of gold during the three months to March, surpassing the previous production record of 97 917 oz, set during the December quarter of 2014.

Both the Leonora operations, in Western Australia, and the Simberi operation, in Papua New Guinea, reported record production, despite a fatality at Simberi in March.

The Simberi mine produced 22 498 oz of gold, of which 9 473 oz were produced during the month of March, exceeding the monthly target run-rate.

The Gwalia mine, which forms part of the Leonora operations, also produced a record 76 954 oz of gold during the quarter, bringing the total Leonora production to 88 790 oz, when also accounting for the King of the Hills mine.

St Barbara noted that Gwalia’s record production was owing to variety of reasons, including higher-grade ore and improved productivity from increased underground waste deposition.

The miner on Wednesday increased the full-year expectations at Gwalia from its previous target of 200 000 oz to 210 000 oz, to between 235 000 oz and 240 000 oz.

However, St Barbara noted that production at Gwalia in the June quarter would likely be lower, as a return to reserve grade was anticipated, and a number of new stopes were started.

Meanwhile, full-year guidance at the Simberi mine has been maintained at between 70 000 oz and 80 000 oz, while the King of the Hills mine was expected to deliver between 45 000 oz and 50 000 oz during the full year.
