PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining giant BHP Billiton has continued its redundancy programme, this time cutting some 163 staff members from its payroll at the Mt Arthur coal mine, in New South Wales.

The redundancies followed an internal review at the Mt Arthur coal mine.

“The coal industry continues to experience difficult market conditions, including continuing low coal prices and a high Australian dollar and in order to remain globally competitive, the cost base of our Mt Arthur Coal operations must be reset,” New South Wales energy coal asset president Peter Sharpe said.

“The purpose of this transformation exercise is to ensure that our operations remain sustainable for the long term, and we will continue to assess opportunities and make the necessary adjustments.”

In February, BHP and its coal alliance partner Mitsubishi cut 230 jobs from the Saraji coal mine, in Queensland, and in April followed this with a further 36 job cuts at its Illawarra operations, in New South Wales.

The miner also cancelled a A$360-million overburden removal contract at its Goonyella Riverside coal mine, in Queensland, putting more than 400 contractor jobs at risk.

It has also been estimated that the diversified miner was aiming to reduce its iron-ore staff by around 3 000, recently appointing an external consultant to assist with an organisational review for the division.

Sharpe said on Friday that the Mt Arthur coal operation would continue to work to make the necessary structural changes to ensure that it could continue to provide jobs to local people, contracts to local businesses, as well as ongoing support for the Muswellbrook community’s groups and organisations.

BHP Billiton’s New South Wales energy coal business employs about 1 900 people including contractors.
