Anglo's Drayton South faces more scrutiny
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – New South Wales Minister for Planning and Infrastructure Brad Hazzard has called for further scrutiny of Anglo American’s Drayton South coal mine, after community concerns were raised.
Hazzard said this week, that he had written to the independent Planning Assessment Commission to request that it defer its review of the proposed opencut mine to allow the Department of Planning and Infrastructure to undertake further work on public concerns.
“The department is currently in the process of reviewing the submissions received during the project’s public exhibition late last year, including detailed submissions from both the Coolmore and Darley studs,” Hazzard said.
The Minister pointed out that the adjacent horse stud farms formed part of the Upper Hunter’s Equine Critical Industry Cluster, and noted that the region’s thoroughbred industry was one of two clusters identified for heighted protection from mining and other resources activities.
“Once the department has considered the response from the mining company, I will be in a better position to advise the Planning Assessment Commission on how to proceed further,” Hazzard said.
The Drayton mine has been in operation since 1983 and produces around five-million tons a year of thermal coal. Anglo American was considering expanding these operations to eight-million tons a year, and increasing the mine life to 2017.
