AngloGold Ashanti has concluded a wage agreement with unions, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), Uasa and Solidarity, in respect of wages and conditions of service for the three-year period starting July 1 and ending June 20, 2021.

The wage agreement allows for increases to the basic wage of category four to eight employees of R700 in year one, R800 in year two and R900 in year three.

Miners, artisans and officials will receive increases of 5.5% for each year of the agreement.

The three unions represent 62% of AngloGold’s employees in the gold sector.

Additionally, there will also be revised shift arrangements at AngloGold Ashanti’s operations.

The wage agreement makes provision for a shift arrangement increase of R300 in year one, R200 in year two and R100 in year three for category four to eight employees and 1% each year for miners, artisans and officials.

The miner currently employees 7 918 people in the bargaining unit.

Talks with the National Union of Mineworkers, which represents 32.8% of AngloGold’s employees, continue.

Wage negotiations in respect of Harmony Gold, Sibanye-Stillwater and Village Main Reef, with the unions are continuing under the auspices of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration.

Both AMCU and Solidarity have stated that these companies would need to match AngloGold’s offer in order for the parties to reach an agreement, otherwise strike action is imminent.

Wage negotiations started in July.
