JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) - The current CEO of Anglo American’s niobium and phosphates businesses, Ruben Fernandes, would take the reins of the now combined nickel, niobium and phosphates businesses from December 1.

In July, group CEO Mark Cutifani unveiled a new structure for Anglo American, consolidating its ten business units into six, namely Kumba Iron Ore, Iron Ore Brazil, Coal, Base Metals and Minerals, Platinum and De Beers.

The 48-year-old Fernandes would report to the CEO of the Base Metals and Minerals group Duncan Wanblad.

“Fernandes has already made a significant contribution to the niobium and phosphates businesses. His strong leadership and commercial acumen will help him successfully combine the management of nickel, niobium and phosphates as we create optimal value through improved performance,” Wanblad commented.

This comes as the CEO of the nickel unit Walter De Simoni stepped down after four years at the helm – and after 36 years in total at Anglo American – to pursue other opportunities.
