JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has gained majority union recognition at Sibanye Gold’s Driefontein operations.

The JSE- and NYSE-listed company on Friday said it had reached an agreement with AMCU this week that was consistent with the previous agreement it had with former majority union and AMCU rival, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), as the emerging union secured over 60% of the mine’s employees as members.

AMCU national treasurer Jimmy Gama told Mining Weekly Online that it currently had about 9 500 members at Driefontein, a number Sibanye senior VP corporate affairs James Wellsted disputed.

“There are only 10 700 employees at the Driefontein operations. That figure given [membership numbers] is too high,” he said.

Sibanye declined to place an exact number on the ever-changing dynamics of union membership, but confirmed that AMCU had more than 60% of unionised employees.

Further, the union was eyeing recognition at Sibanye’s Beatrix mine, where its membership numbers were rapidly increasing, but Wellsted said that the union had not yet met the estimated 30% threshold required for organisational rights.

Gama stated that AMCU currently had more than 1 000 members at Beatrix, which employs about 9 500 workers.

AMCU membership numbers at Sibanye’s 12 200-strong Kloof operations have only slightly increased, he noted.

Sibanye's share price on Friday fell 4.82%.
