TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – US coal producer Alpha Natural Resources has reported that a contractor has died this week without any witnesses at the scene.

An employee of Rogers Petroleum, a fuel service contractor for Alpha affiliate Republic Energy, died on Tuesday on a coal mine haul road on the Republic Energy surface mine, in Raleigh County, West Virginia.

Alpha reported that the driver was hauling a load of diesel fuel when the truck overturned in a single-vehicle accident.

The company explained that there did not appear to have been an eyewitness to the accident and it was unknown whether the death was mining related or owing to natural causes.

Republic Energy was working with state and federal agencies to complete the investigation into the circumstances of the accident.

The NYSE-listed miner reported on Monday that David Brummitte (34) of Pound, Virginia, was found around early morning at affiliate Paramont Coal Company’s Deep Mine 41, near McClure, in Virginia. The miner was conducting a preshift exam when he was struck by rock sloughing off the mine wall.
