Australian company Alliance Nickel has agreed a non-binding team sheet with Samsung SDI for future offtake of battery-grade nickel and cobalt sulphate products from the NiWest nickel and cobalt project, in Western Australia.

The term sheet not only outlines general terms under which Samsung will enter into a binding offtake agreement, but also provides that Samsung and Alliance will discuss a potential acquisition of an equity interest in the NiWest project.

"We are delighted to introduce Samsung SDI as a new potential long-term strategic partner in the NiWest project, particularly given the current challenging market conditions facing the critical minerals sector,” said Alliance MD and CEO Paul Kopejtka.

NiWest is an advanced nickel and cobalt development, about 55 km east of Leonora in the north-eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia. The proposed processing facility for NiWest is about 30 km from Glencore’s Murrin Murrin operation – the biggest nickel and cobalt mine in Australia.

NiWest is forecast to produce 100 000 t/y of battery-grade nickel and cobalt sulphate products for the electric vehicle market.

A definitive feasibility study is well advanced and will be completed by mid-2024.
