All-electric Ontario mine achieves commercial production

Battery electric bolter in use at Borden underground - manufactured by Ontario-based MacLean Engineering.
The all-electric Borden mine, which gold major Newmont Goldcorp bills as its “mine of the future”, has achieved commercial production – on schedule and within budget.
The mine, in Chapleau, Ontario, features state-of-the-art health and safety controls, digital mining technologies and processes, and low-carbon energy vehicles.
It is the first underground mine in Canada to replace all diesel mobile equipment with battery electric vehicles and the Canadian and Ontario governments each granted C$5-million towards electrification of the mine.
“Borden joins the next generation of Newmont Goldcorp mines and leverages our leading land position to anchor this new gold district in Ontario,” commented president and CEO Tom Palmer in a media statement on Tuesday.
Ore from Borden is processed at the existing mill at Porcupine in Timmins, profitably extending operations at the gold mining complex. The mine has an ore production capacity of 4 000 t/d over a mine life of up to 15 years.
The company’s battery and electric mobile equipment will eliminate all greenhouse gases (GHGs) associated with the movement of ore and waste rock, equal to roughly 50% of the total GHGs on site – or 5 000 t/y of carbon dioxide (CO2) – as well as reduce maintenance and energy costs. With the decrease in emissions comes a reduction in underground ventilation needs. The use of an efficient on-demand ventilation system will provide added benefits – the Borden mine will require 50% less ventilation than a baseline diesel-powered underground mine.
Last week, the Borden project was officially inaugurated.
At 1 000 km2, Newmont Goldcorp believes Borden’s land package represents additional exploration upside as the deposit remains open at depth.
