PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Alkane Resources has reported a maiden underground ore reserve of 61 600 oz at its Tomingley gold mine, in New South Wales.

The maiden underground ore reserve of 524 400 t, grading 3.66 g/t gold was within the total project resource of 11.25-million tonnes, grading 2.9 g/t gold.

Alkane poured its first gold at the Tomingley openpit mine in February last year, with the project expected to produce between 50 000 oz/y and 60 000 oz/y, based on a yearly throughput of one-million tonnes, over a life-of-mine of seven-and-a-half years.

Alkane was in the midst of a prefeasibility study for the underground operation, and had considered a number of mining options to assess the most technically and financially viable method.

The company expected underground ore production to start some nine months after the start of development, and to continue for a period of nearly three years. During this time, it was anticipated that the higher-grade underground ore would be blended with stockpiled lower-grade ore from the openpits, and used to supplement openpit mill feed to maintain a consistent ore throughput and feed grade, thus extending the life of the Tomingley operation.

Alkane said that further drilling from underground developments had the potential to extend the overall resource base at depth.
