Global agribusiness company Syngenta officially unveiled the expansion of its Brits Formulation, Fill & Packaging Plant (FF&P) site in the North West last week, which added an automated herbicide filling line to its site.

About R20-million was invested into the expansion and the new line is expected to significantly boost herbicide production to satisfy the strong demand on the continent.

With poor weed control being one of the constraints to increasing crop production, herbicides have become the foremost weed management tool in agriculture. Having fought weeds with tillage and hand weeding, which has long-term consequences like soil erosion, herbicides is a no-till agriculture tool to fight weeds.

The investment is in line with the company’s commitment made in May 2012 to build a $1-billion business in Africa over the next ten years. Through this commitment, the company also promises that it will make a cumulative investment of over $500-million in Africa. This will be spread out to recruit and train African employees, develop a distribution channel network and local production facilities and increase access to technology for both smallholders and large-scale farmers on the continent.

“The facility will help us to effectively serve the growing requirements of herbicide on the continent, reduce time to market and improve efficiencies by significantly increasing our previous filling capabilities,” said Brits FF&P head Paul Claxton during the unveiling.

He added that the expansion was in line with Syngenta’s Good Growth Plan, which helps farmers across the world to grow more food using fewer resources, while protecting nature and improving life for people in the rural communities.

“With investment such as the expansion of the facility, we are able to solve the world’s toughest challenges of population growth, food demand and strain on resources such as land, water and energy.”
