Industrial gas company Afrox this week started the construction of its R300-million 150 t/d air separation unit (ASU) in zone three of the Coega industrial development zone (IDZ), in the Eastern Cape.

The unit, which would be commissioned during the first quarter of 2015, would separate 150 t/d of air to produce mainly oxygen, nitrogen and argon for various clients in the region.

The ASU would also have ten-day storage facilities on site, Afrox MD Brett Kimber said in a statement.

Afrox, which secured funding for the ASU in November, indicated that it planned to “broaden its focus” beyond its established Eastern Cape automotive and medical customer base.

“Already a supplier to a number of our investors, including DCD Wind Towers, Agni Steels and Dynamic Commodities, its positioning and establishment in the IDZ means it will be able to service its established customer base while moving into new markets,” said Coega Development Corporation business development executive manager Christopher Mashigo.

He noted that the construction of another R300-million ASU by industrial gas company Air Products was well under way for completion during the third quarter of this year.

The company broke ground on the unit’s construction, also in zone three of the IDZ, late last year, and had completed the structural construction by January.
