JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Aim-listed African Minerals has appointed Stephan Weber as group chief operating officer, with effect from February 1.

Weber was previously CEO of Anglo American Iron Ore Brazil and a member of Anglo American’s group executive committee.

Prior to that, he served as MD of Rio Tinto’s HIsmelt division and a member of the executive committee of Rio Tinto Iron Ore.

“I am delighted to welcome Stephan to the team. Stephan has a world-class engineering pedigree, and has delivered major multi-element projects successfully and continuously for over ten years, in technically challenging environments.

“With our aim of achieving the 20-million ton a year sustainable production rate during quarter two this year, Stephan's focus will be on debottlenecking and stabilising our current operations, and at the same time embarking on Tonkolili's next expansion to 35-million tons a year,” commented African Minerals CEO Keith Calder.
