AFRICAN DISUNION

26th June 2015

Font size: - +

The twenty-fifth African Union summit, held in Johannesburg earlier this month, was thrown into a diplomatic crisis by the controversial entry into (and eventual exit from) the country by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes. The Southern Africa Litigation Centre filed a court application seeking Bashir’s arrest and extradition to the ICC. But Bashir was not only able to attend the summit, disregard a court ruling that he be prevented from leaving the country and fly out unhindered by the authorities, but also participated in the ‘family photograph’ taken on Sunday June 14. Bashir can be seen standing, in the front row, only two leaders away (to the right) from his host, President Jacob Zuma.
