PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Copper miner Aditya Birla has warned of additional costs at its defunct Mt Gordon operation, in Queensland, following a significant rainfall event.

The miner told shareholders on Thursday that the water level at certain areas within the Mt Gordon mine site had risen to above the mandatory reporting level, prompting the company to implement immediate mitigation strategies to manage the situation.

Representatives from the Department of Heritage Protection have undertaken a site inspection, and their report was expected shortly.

Aditya Birla noted that while the Mt Gordon operations remained under care and maintenance, which meant that the company’s copper production for the full year would not be affected, the rising water levels would result in additional costs to rectify and manage the excess water flow.

The Mt Gordon project was idled in 2013, after the mine failed to sustain suitable production levels in a declining commodity market.
