In an effort to expose students to the working world of logistics and supply chain the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) hosted its annual Logistics Day on September 2, 2015.

The event is prepared with the intention to provide Tut’s students with practical experience of supply chain management and an opportunity to network with industry specialists.

"This day is an outstanding opportunity for our institution to extend cooperation with companies and exchange knowledge,” the University comments.

Speakers at the event included the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, CHEP Supply Chain Solutions, Makoya Group, DHL, Johnson Controls, the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply and Dovetail Business Solutions.

Dovetail Key Accounts Director, Ralf Rolle, enticed the students with a presentation regarding the world of IT in Logistics and highlighted key areas where critical skills are needed.

"IT play a crucial part in the advancement of the logistics industry," Rolle notes. “For companies to be more efficient while spending less, continuous IT innovations are needed to ensure that we, not only stay on par with global developments, but also bring new innovations forth to safeguard a competitive logistics industry.”

Rolle added that a big need for analytical thinkers exists in the logistics industry, which hosts an array of career opportunities. He urged students to get involved at ground level and build their skills from the bottom up.

“While it is a great motivator to aim for high paying positions, it is important to realise that these jobs require experience and hands-on knowledge of the industry. Companies view experience and degrees in the same light – both are crucial,” Rolle concluded.
