LONDON (miningweekly.com) – Power and automation giant ABB has secured a $103-million contract to fit mining major Vale’s S11D iron-ore mine in the Carajas mountains of northern Brazil with electrical and automation systems.

This followed the 2012 installation and commissioning of the primary transmission substation, which Vale now wanted to extend to the excavators, stackers, reclaimers and conveyor belt system of the mine.

ABB would supply a 230 kV in-feed substation to connect the mine to the electricity grid and 42 secondary stations, which would be contained in ABB’s prefabricated, walk-in, modular, outdoor enclosures.

Further, ABB would supply the motors for the mine’s conveyor belts.

“Truckless transportation will use conveyor belts to move rock and ore around the site, with lower carbon emissions, reduced operating costs and greater safety than the truck-based system it is replacing,” said ABB process automation division head Veli-Matti Reinikkala.

He explained that conventional transport would require about 100 off-highway trucks using 77% more diesel a year.
