Mining forms an important part of all Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries’ economies, and diversified technology company 3M aims to increase sales volumes in this sector by continually improving its product offering, says 3M South Africa and SADC MD Ismail Mapara.

The company introduced a range of new products into the mining sector, including safety glasses and respiratory support equipment, during the fourth quarter of 2014.

3M’s SecureFit protective eyewear is equipped with self-adjusting pressure diffusion temple technology – a scientific advancement that helps diffuse pressure over the ear, enhancing frame temple comfort, while not compromising security of fit.

The lightweight safety glasses also have soft, adjustable nosepads that provide additional comfort.

“One mining company was so impressed by these safety glasses that they immediately ordered 2 000 units for their employees,” Mapara states.

3M also introduced a new range of disposable and reusable respirators.

3M South Africa country technical manager Gunter Halfar took Mining Weekly on a tour of the company’s customer innovation centre in Woodmead, Johannesburg, where he demon-strated some of the respirators.

He showcased 3M’s Rugged Comfort 6500 Series half-face-piece reusable respirator, which helps to provide respiratory protection in harsh, dirty environments against airborne contaminants when used with approved 3M cartridges and filters.

“The resilient silicone face seal – soft but firm – helps to provide comfort, durability and stability,” Halfar highlighted.

He added that the 8822 disposable respirator’s cooling flow valve reduced heat and moisture by helping to direct exhaled breath and moisture downward to reduce fogging on grinding and welding shields.

Halfar also demonstrated the company’s disposable N95 particulate welding respirator, which was designed to help provide respiratory protection for applications, such as welding or soldering, where metal fumes might be present.

In March, 3M launched a new global corporate brand platform, 3M Science Applied to Life, which emphasises how the company’s science impacts on the environment.

The platform underscores the company’s reach in sectors ranging from 3M’s glass bubbles in cars, Bluetooth-enabled stethoscopes and microreflective sheeting that helps to make roads safer, to brightness-enhancing technology used in electronics.

The launch entailed an all-digital campaign designed to reach existing and future customers.

“Science and collaboration are at the heart of everything we create that makes life better. Investing in the 3M brand with this platform is the next step to advance 3M’s business strategy, enhance 3M’s customer experience and leverage the strength of the brand across each of our businesses to drive additional growth worldwide,” states Mapara.
