Zambia

Zambia is a landlocked country in southern Africa. The capital is Lusaka. With a population of about 20-million, Zambia's economy is heavily dependent on copper mining, which accounts for the majority of export earnings. The country is one of the world's largest copper producers, with most mining activity concentrated in the Copperbelt province in the north. Other key sectors include agriculture, tourism and energy generation, particularly hydroelectric power from the Zambezi river. The currency is the Zambian kwacha. Zambia is a republic with a presidential system of government. The country is a member of the Southern African Development Community, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and the African Union. Zambia gained independence from Britain in 1964, emerging from the former Northern Rhodesia, and has maintained relative political stability compared with some regional neighbours, though it has faced economic challenges including debt management and currency volatility.
