West Wits

West Wits is a gold mining operation in South Africa owned and operated by Sibanye-Stillwater. The facility is located in the West Wits region of Gauteng province, part of the historic Witwatersrand gold mining basin that has been the backbone of South African gold production for more than a century. West Wits comprises underground mining operations extracting gold-bearing ore from deep-level reef horizons. The operation forms part of Sibanye-Stillwater's South African gold portfolio, which the company has maintained alongside its diversification into platinum-group metals and battery metals. West Wits has faced challenges common to deep-level South African gold mines, including rising costs, ageing infrastructure and seismic activity. The mine employs several thousand workers and contributes to the local economy of the West Rand district. Production levels and operational performance at West Wits are closely watched as indicators of the viability of South Africa's remaining deep-level gold sector. The facility has undergone restructuring and optimisation efforts in recent years as Sibanye-Stillwater seeks to extend mine life and improve margins in a constrained gold price environment.
