Virginia

Virginia is a city in the Free State province of South Africa. It is located in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality, approximately 120 km north-east of Bloemfontein, the provincial capital. The city forms part of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality alongside neighbouring Welkom and other towns in the goldfields region. Virginia was established in the 1940s as a mining town during the development of the Free State goldfields, one of the most productive gold-mining regions in South Africa. The town was named after the wife of the general manager of one of the early mining companies in the area. Virginia's economy has historically been dominated by gold mining, with several major shafts and operations located in and around the city. In recent years the area has attracted attention for natural gas and helium projects, including the Virginia Gas Project operated by Renergen, which aims to produce liquefied natural gas and helium from underground reserves. The city serves as a residential and service centre for mining and energy operations in the Free State goldfields. Virginia's population is estimated at around 150,000 people. The city has faced economic challenges as gold mining has declined, prompting diversification efforts into other sectors including energy and gas production.
