Vaal

The Vaal is an economic region in South Africa centred on the Vaal River and the industrial corridor that developed along its banks. It spans parts of southern Gauteng and the northern Free State, with the Vaal Triangle forming its industrial core. The region encompasses major urban centres including Vereeniging, Vanderbijlpark and Sasolburg, which grew around heavy industry established in the mid-twentieth century. Steel production, petrochemicals, energy generation and manufacturing have historically anchored the Vaal's economy, with ArcelorMittal South Africa and Sasol operating flagship facilities in the area. The Vaal River itself is a critical water source for Gauteng and supports irrigation, industrial use and power generation, with the Vaal Dam serving as a strategic reservoir. Economic activity in the region has faced structural challenges since the 1990s, including deindustrialisation, ageing infrastructure and rising unemployment, prompting government interventions such as special economic zones to stimulate reinvestment. The Vaal remains significant in national economic planning owing to its industrial base, proximity to Johannesburg and role in the broader Gauteng city-region. Environmental pressures, including water quality and pollution from legacy industry, feature prominently in regional development debates. The area retains strategic importance for manufacturing, logistics and energy security despite ongoing economic transition.
