Supply Chain

Supply chain refers to the network of organisations, people, activities, information and resources involved in moving a product or service from supplier to customer. The process encompasses procurement, production, logistics, warehousing, distribution and delivery. In business operations, supply chain management coordinates these flows to optimise efficiency, reduce costs and ensure timely delivery. Key activities include sourcing raw materials, manufacturing, inventory management, transportation and order fulfilment. Modern supply chains often span multiple countries and continents, involving complex relationships between suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and end users. Effective supply chain management requires visibility across all stages, risk mitigation strategies and responsive planning. Technology such as enterprise resource planning systems, tracking software and data analytics increasingly supports supply chain operations. Disruptions to supply chains—whether from natural disasters, geopolitical events, pandemics or infrastructure failures—can have significant economic consequences. In the public sector, supply chain management includes procurement processes, tender administration and contract management, areas often subject to regulatory oversight and scrutiny for transparency and value for money.
