Springs

Springs is a city in Gauteng province, South Africa, situated on the East Rand about 50 kilometres east of Johannesburg. The city has a population of approximately 200,000 people within its municipal boundaries and forms part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. Springs developed as a major gold-mining centre following the discovery of gold in the area in the late nineteenth century, with mining operations shaping the city's economic and physical landscape for over a century. The city's name derives from the natural springs that were found in the area by early settlers. Historically, Springs was one of the most important mining towns on the Witwatersrand, with numerous gold mines operating in and around the city, including operations near neighbouring Brakpan and Daggafontein. While traditional deep-level mining has declined, the area remains significant for gold production, particularly through surface retreatment operations that reprocess old mine dumps and tailings. The city's economy has diversified beyond mining to include manufacturing, particularly in the steel, engineering and chemical sectors. Springs is connected to Johannesburg and other East Rand towns by road and rail infrastructure, and its industrial base continues to support employment in the region. The city retains its historical character as a mining town while adapting to broader economic shifts in Gauteng province.
