Rössing

Rössing is a large-scale open-pit uranium mine situated in the Erongo region of Namibia, about 70 kilometres inland from the port town of Swakopmund. Operated by Rössing Uranium Limited, a subsidiary of China General Nuclear Power, the mine has been in continuous production since 1976, making it one of the longest-running uranium operations in the world. Rössing is notable for its scale and longevity, having produced hundreds of millions of pounds of uranium oxide over its operational life. The mine extracts low-grade uranium ore from a large open pit and processes it through a conventional milling and acid-leach circuit to produce yellowcake for export to nuclear power plants globally. At its peak, Rössing was one of the largest uranium mines by output, and it remains a cornerstone of Namibia's mining economy and a major employer in the Erongo region. The operation has undergone several expansions and optimisation programmes to extend its life of mine and maintain competitiveness in a volatile uranium market. Rössing's production is critical to meeting baseload nuclear fuel demand, particularly in Asia and Europe. The mine's long operational history and strategic ownership underscore its importance in the global nuclear fuel supply chain and Namibia's role as a leading uranium exporter.
