Pakistan

Pakistan is a country in South Asia, bordered by India to the east, Afghanistan and Iran to the west, China to the north, and the Arabian Sea to the south. The capital is Islamabad, while Karachi is the largest city and principal commercial centre. Pakistan has a population of more than 230-million people, making it the fifth most populous country in the world. The economy is diverse, with agriculture, textiles, manufacturing and services as key sectors, though the country also possesses significant untapped mineral resources including copper, gold and coal. The currency is the Pakistani rupee. Pakistan operates as a federal parliamentary republic, with a president as head of state and a prime minister as head of government. The country is a member of regional and international organisations including the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the United Nations. Pakistan's mining sector has attracted international interest, particularly for large-scale projects such as the Reko Diq copper–gold deposit in Balochistan province, one of the world's largest undeveloped copper–gold resources. Pakistan gained independence from British India in 1947 and has since developed as a major regional power with a strategic location linking South Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East.
